| There's a bit of tension here between choosing the best translation of a word and choosing the Modern English word that's actually descended from the original. For example, I think 'become' (or 'happen' or 'come to be') is a lot closer to the (relevant) meaning of ġewurþe, even though worth is a modern form of the "same" word. But, of course, if you accept everything that has an appropriate meaning, it turns into a recite/paraphrase-the-Lord's-Prayer quiz instead of a translate-the-Anglo-Saxon-version quiz. |
