	I believe Chicago has been called the White City from time to time, as seen in "Devil in the White City".I did not read the book personally, but do know it is set in there.

	I lived in the Chicago area for 11 years, and though not a native, I've never heard Chicago called "The White City". Judging by this list, on wikipedia (I know...such an awesome research tool eyeroll) White City has never been associated with Chicago. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_nicknames_for_Chicago

	The buildings of the 1893 Chicago Columbian Exhibition (a World's Fair) were called The White City, and I believe that the book wtuckermoore references is about a serial killer at that Fair. The city of Chicago itself has never been called The White City. (Lived in the Chicago area from birth until fleeing 22 years later.)

	I am a chicago native and the white city was only a reference to the 1893 Columbian Exposition Worlds fair. Architect Daniel Burnham designed a bunch of buildings out of white plaster made to look like marble for the fair, and they were removed immediately after the fair except for the museum of science and industry, thus the white city is no longer an applicable name. however i am fairly certain that st petersberg has also been called the venice of the east, and i also made the prague spires mix up

	Wow I'm from Edinburgh and have never heard it described as Athens of the North. Its more common as 'Auld Reekie'. Every day is a school day I guess. :)

	@staarbux: You must be astoundingly unobservant to live in Edinburgh and never having heard it described as the Athens of the North. The description is everywhere in the City Centre particularly at galleries, museums and exhibitions. The term dates back to the the time when Edinburgh led the Northern Enlightenment and this was subsequently expressed in its beautiful neo-classical architecture. Try a google search and you will find over 80,000 hits. Auld Reekie is an older (and more common - >500,000 hits) nickname arising from the medieval city which was both both filthy and smoky.

	@zeppelinoid, I live in Edinburgh and when I saw the answer I did recall hearing it called that before I moved here (probably on the wikipedia page or something), but I think it's a bit of a strech to say "the discription is everywhere in the City Centre" because it really isn't.

	@allizonk: This is probably one of those things where everyone uses the term apart from those it refers to. I am just a regular visitor and I suppose I spend more time in the tourist areas than a typical resident. The Edinburgh World Heritage site promotes the city as the Athens of the North - http://www.ewht.org.uk/visit/trails/athens-of-the-north as does the Royal Mile site - http://theroyalmile.org.uk/enlightenment.html The term is also used liberally in the BBC, Scotsman, and Gateway to Scotland sites.
