| @RobPro - Yes, and the 2-word "United States" is the standard "common" name of the country, just as "United Kingdom" is short for "United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland" and "Sri Lanka" is short for "Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka." Why use official names to rule out some countries, but not others? Argentina is officially the "Argentine Republic," so if we're keeping the US off this quiz, why also Argentina? (See also: French Republic, Italian Republic, Hellenic Republic, etc.) Look at the Countries of the World quiz to see the standard names Sporcle uses for each country. I think we should be consistent across the site. I'm aware of the confusion, but I'm also very surprised that it's being discarded with such prejudice. Even after the inconsistency is pointed out, people keep voting down these comments and I'm really confused as to why. Do people think only the US should be referred to by its full, official name on Sporcle? |
