Maybe accept just "Newfoundland." Has the full name always been "Newfoundland and Labrador"? I rarely hear it called that anyway.

Flick, I think what lancehoch is saying is that if you're going to accept Netherlands, you should accept Solomon Islands and Marshall Islands, as they have the same ending.

vdubb86 and Tamarind: 'Islands' countries are now considered bonuses, as my reserve 'nine' is South African provinces and although I just love the words Mpumalanga and Limpopo , I have decided land(s) may have more appeal. Thanx both

Where's Yukon, Northwest Territories, and Nunavut? Maybe say "ten southernmost Canadian provinces" instead.

@geomonkey: those are territories. Flick, if you get too much flack there are 9 "L" countries or "D" capitals. But just by knowing something as weird as that the # of provinces of SA, you have been elevated to near sporcle-god status in my eyes!

@tamarind as far as most people are concerned Ireland is a mainland country as is Iceland and New Zealand. Now if by 'mainland' you mean 'continental' then that is a different matter. In that case you could also exclude the UK which would not meet your criteria for mainland.

OK, so evidently South Sudan isn't smaller than 1000 square miles...or lies on the prime meridian...or borders Poland...or ends in "--land". Rough start for the rookie.

I did not know that Canada had 10 provinces and 3 territories. I assumed it had 13 provinces. I don't know what the difference is - can anyone enlighten me? Are they governed differently? Do the residents have different status than those of the provinces? I like the learning opportunity! P.S. Great quiz, too.

@deugea: the three territories of Canada have a different status mainly for political purposes; essentially the provinces have more freedom in autonomy from the federal government than the territories do. However, the people living in the territories have the same citizenship as the people in the provinces (I think anyways). The reason for the different political status is related to population density, as there are just over 100 000 people in the territories combined despite comprising rougly 2/5 of Canada's size.

A rather interesting sidenote about Canadian territories: they are governed by consensus; no political parties, no official opposition, and though there are elected representatives, the leaders are elected from among those representatives. Living democracy and so far it works. And it's cheaper.

Netherlands ends with an S . Technically the UK ends with land as in it's proper title . But nobody ever remembers Northern Ireland or maybe they just want to forget about it -understandable I suppose . Then there is England , and Scotland but they are not states which the UK is which is all the more reason for using it's proper title and not the short or common usage format.
