Quite slow maths, to be honest. Knock a couple of minutes off the time. Good quiz though

Fun, but too easy. Just remove two minutes and let the skill really matter.

Why do Americans say Math? If you're going to shorten Mathematics surely it's maths?

@Rhys: Math is the general term for mathematics. Maths can be used in the same way, but it is usually used to refer to multiple types of mathematics. For example, if a problem needs to use Trigonometry and Calculus, that problem would need to use those two maths. Or at least that's how I use the words. But don't hate on us Americans, our ancestors came up with it. It's just how we're taught. (Also, "maths" sounds silly.)

Hmmm, are there many taking the test multiple times? 24% get all 30 correct in the allotted time? I got to the beginning of the Grab Bag and was shocked to see how low a percentile I fell in. Took it again, (now knowing all answers) and still missed the last one before timing out. Only 76th percentile. Great quiz...I need to do one-a-day!

Interesting game. It was easy for me because I was a freakin' math major, but I like the idea, and I liked the little twists (throwing in a ^.5 and ^0, for example).

Great quiz. The ^0.5 really threw me off, wasting a lot of time before I had to move on. Even with the answer it doesn't make sense to me :) I started typing 7, then 326, 315, 326, 333 before I finally got the meaning. An explanation in the comments could have been useful :) (And time saving) Keep these coming - I really enjoyed it.

Looks like we all crossed a culture barrier today. "Math" vs "Maths" or never shortening "Mathematics". As a lazy person and not just as an American, I'm going with the least syllables and the fewest letters, math it remains for me. Show me an equivalent where the Brits have the shorter pronunciation and i'll gladly convert.

@ SowCrates: I'm interested to know how you speak, if you think math has less syllables than maths - they both have one syllable when I say them! I'm British so would always use maths, but I'm certainly familiar enough with American culture not to be confused by the usage of math, or bother whinging about it...

Fun - I take pride in being good at basic math (to make up for how bad I am at higher-level math). I got them all except section five, which I got flustered on and couldn't finish. I'd love to see more of these.

why do people think it should be maths?! do you guys shorten economics by writing econs? of course, hence why mathematics is totally acceptable abbreviated as math

Only one problem with the quiz: you can answer with the negative of the absolute value of an answer and it is still counted as correct! (Don't ask me how I figured that out...it's sort of embarrassing)
sss

@ unc_rameses: unfortunately that's a limitation of the Sporcle code; it strips all non-alphabetic characters, spaces and common words like 'and' and 'the' before comparing the input to the answer. Bit annoying, but still a good quiz. Re my previous comment, are there more than one of you out there that view 'maths' as a polysyllabic word then?!

Sowcrates clearly wrote "least syllables and fewest letters." Maths=5 letters. Math=4 letters.

...and mentioned 'shorter pronunciation'. They're equivalent, is all I was saying. And typing an extra letter isn't really anything to get upset about, although thanks for counting them for me, I don't think I could've managed that.

I only had 2 problems with the quiz. The first one was the surprise of the extra problems (I did think the quiz was given a bit too much time for just 6 questions but didn't expect each "DL" to have multiple problems). The second was the use of the ^. I guess it's been so long since I've needed to use a calculator with an "x^y" key that I'd forgotten how ^ is used in math.
Now, let's get a quiz that requires us to ! the numbers. (On the face, it wouldn't be too much trouble although to keep things really interesting would be to randomize the numbers.)

-15*4 is actually 60 not -60 so it should b 60/20 which is 3 not -3 so then it would finally b 3^4 not -3^4 other than that a pretty good quiz

-15*4 is definitely -60, so he got it right. Good work. Also 3^4 and (-3)^4 are both 81, so that wouldn't matter anyway.

nice one. Sheesh, got 100% but boy did I have to think hard on a couple of those questions. @memphis: -15*4 = -60; where did you get the idea that -15-15-15-15 (-15*4) is +60? If you still think you are right, then you won't mind agreeing upon receiving -15*4 USD from me. I'll send you my bank details when you've figured it out.

WHAT?? how is -15*4 positive? negative times positive is negative. I don't know what's worse, that you got that wrong or that you felt the need to tell us all that you are wrong!
