| I assembled the list items on a work computer where sporcle was blocked, but was dismayed upon coming home and seeing that it actually had a high overlap with the "War Movies" list already on the main page, but I liked going with the directors as a hint so I figured I should go ahead. Now when I see your list, I just feel totally unoriginal and would have held back if I'd seen it beforehand (I'm new to sporcle and haven't been searching much).
However if I had based it off it I would have been sure to steal the Watkin's film (great film; good call) and Heartbreak Ridge (which I haven't even heard of). Interestingly, I came very close to using the same Spanish Civil War answer as you (but needed Loach for Irish Civil) and WWI (used Kubrick elsewhere). I also almost used Good-Bad-Ugly for the Mexican Revolution. I'm less surprised by some of the other overlaps, though, because there just aren't that many movies about the Cambodian Civil War, the Bosnian War (though I almost went with After the Rain) or the Anglo-Zulu War. The surprising thing is that I really can't think of very many alternatives even for the American Revolution, Napoleonic wars or most of the roman/greek era stuff. And trust me, if there is any way I could call Dreyer's "Passion of Joan of Arc" a war movie, I would have used that over the Besson travesty in a snap.
Anyway, glad we share an interest and sorry if I made you feel rifled. |
