Should be the *mud* below my feet.

Thanks for catching that. I thought it was mud, but when I saw the source I assumed I'd just been wrong all along. A relisten clearly confirms that it's mud.

These differ significantly from the Joan Baez lyrics that I grew up with.

@soshoreman: I like Joan Baez's version, but I'm not really sure why she made the changes she did, since they don't really add anything to the song. I also think that's what causes some of the confusion in online lyrics sites.

Odd that possibly the best song about the American Civil War was written by a Canadian.
And I don't think Joan Baez intentionally changed the lyrics. I think she was working from memory.

Joan Baez learned the song from the record, and admitted that she'd made some errors in the lyrics when she recorded it.

Great quiz! I've always heard it as "Virgil, quick come see, there goes THE Robert E. Lee", as in the CSS Robert E. Lee, the Confederate Ship. Also, lyrically it's more plausible that he would see that than his wife calling him to see General Robert E. Lee

@khg: That does seem plausible, and I've heard others say that before, but I didn't find a reference to it in any lyrics. I figured people would be getting THE just about 100% of the time anyway, so leaving one off the quiz didn't seem so bad.
