| Yes, Muster has 40 clay titles (to put that in perspective, that's 11 more than Nadal currently has, and 5 less than Vilas. And Muster won the majority of his clay titles in 1995 and 1996), including the French. However, he could play on hardcourts if he wanted, for he won Miami in 1997 and he won the Essen Masters event in 1995 (it was on carpet, no less, and I think he took out Sampras along the way, or maybe I'm thinking of a different non-clay event). And he made the Miami final in I believe it was 1989, and I think someone actually picked him over Lendl. Unfortunately, the final never happened because the night before the final, he was run over by a drunk driver and confined to a wheelchair for multiple months, so that was really one of the more inspiring comebacks in tennis history. Even with 44 career titles (and a #1 ranking), he was a big underachiever. He's even returned to the main circuit from his senior play, and has a ranking again! |
