• Construct a 33-man roster for each team, much like today's All-Star rosters. • Choose at least one player from every team in every city: at least one Atlanta Brave, but also at least one Milwaukee Brave and at least one Boston Brave. So instead of 33 slots spread among 16 teams -- like in the "real" game -- we have 21 NL teams: the current 16 clubs, plus the two previous Braves teams, the Montreal Expos, the Brooklyn Dodgers and the New York Giants. • Pick players who were All-Stars and had great seasons while with the team in question since the All-Star Game began in 1933.

not a lot of other Nationals to choose from, unless you want to bump Chipper Jones, Eddie Mathews or Mike Schmidt for Ryan Zimmerman...

Offensively, Ernie Banks 1957 and 1958 seasons are very comparable statistically to Larkin's 1996 season. But Larkin won the gold glove and Banks didn't. Since there are other Reds and Cubs on the team, though, you could make that switch and it would be hard to argue.

the thing about this quiz, is that, as an all-star team, every team has to be represented. So good players get screwed for the best Boston Brave and Washington National. (WALLY BERGER???)

I like this list! Can't remember the last time there were three Reds players on an All-Star team :)

How in the world Rob Neyer can create a list of NL All Stars and not include Bob Gibson and his 1.12 ERA is well beyond comprehension. To exclude him over a reliever(Hoffman) makes zero sense.

Since there's several Milwaukee Braves, and Spahn played in both Boston and Milwaukee, why not use Spahn's 1947 season in Boston to free up an outfield space for somebody who is not Wally Berger? Spahn was better in 1953 than 1947, but he was great in both years, and it seems more fair to lose out to yourself because you have to have a Boston Brave than to lose out to Wally Berger for the same reason. If you do that, you could also put Alfonso Soriano (2006) for the Nationals in the outfield, and then put Bob Gibson on instead of Cordero. Or you could leave Cordero and put somebody really deserving into that outfield slot.

I don't understand why he went with Arky Vaughan instead of Honus Wagner. He's still the best shortstop ever. I also agree that Banks should have replaced Larkin. Larkin was a great player, but Banks' 1959 is one of the all time greatest seasons by a player. If you're really worried about Gold Gloves, then put Banks' 1960 over Larkin's 1996.

Thinking about it even more, I don't understand in what fantasy land Ozzie Smith is better then Ernie Banks. Better fielder, sure, but there is no way his defense could ever make up for his anemic bat.

Xenos: "Pick players who were All-Stars and had great seasons while with the team in question since the All-Star Game began in 1933" Wagner is not eligible.

I stopped playing when Sammy Sosa's 2001 season wasn't included, but Ryan Braun was. If Neyer is going to include numbers based on sheer numbers (as the Bonds inclusion indicates), then Sosa belongs.

@xenos.....ur nuts if you think that banks 1959 season was one of the greatest seasons ever by a player. it was a great season, no doubt, but it may not even be top 50 all time(and incidentally, its not even HIS best. 1958 was)....actually, considering the fact that there are probably atleast 35 individual seasons better than banks just between ruth, gehrig, and foxx, banks' 1959 season probably isnt even near the top 100.

Berger shouldn't be on here..both Warren Spahn and Johnny Sain had fine seasons for the Boston Braves and I would have taken either one, bumped Cordero off and put Alfonso Soriano for the Nationals whose lone season in Washington was a 40/40 year.
