Well, speaking as a New Yorker, they drain every penny out of you in state and local taxes, the cost of living is insane, the commutes suck, etc. Plus, for the price of what would get you a large house in a lot of places, you basically end up with a closet.

I looked into NYC taxes and seriously wonder why you're complaining about them. Stockholm's got a grand total of 55% (top bracket, over $73,000 yearly income. Below $51,000 it's 5% less) in total income tax, which pretty much dwarfs any US city. Sale taxes are typically at 25% and payroll taxes at 31%. They're not, by the way, included in the 55% cited.
