| This is a cool quiz. I've done this for every MVP award since 1911. A couple of interesting notes: catchers have won 16 MVPs and each one was never better than the 3rd most valuable (per WAR) except Joe Mauer who was 2nd to Greinke when Mauer won it. In fact, Mauer is the only catcher to deserve an MVP (the year he lost to Pedroia). The worst-respected should've-been MVPs were Nap Rucker (1911) and Cal Ripken (1984) - both finished 27th in actual MVP voting. The worst MVP award was Stargell's in 1979 - he was 26th in WAR. Two MVPs that get grief for being undeserving, Cookie Lavagetto and Kirk Gibson, were both No. 1 in WAR. In 1950, Ned Garver was 13-18 with only 85 Ks and a 3.39 ERA, but should have been MVP based on WAR. The guy was most underapprciated was, amazingly, Willie Mays: he deserved 8 MVPs more than he actually received. |
