| I hate to be pedantic, but some of these answers are completely wrong. To correctly determine the shortest path between two points on the globe, you need to use a "great circle" route, which aligns both points on the maximum circumference around a sphere. For instance, the great circle route between Vancouver, BC and Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan should look like this: http://www.gcmap.com/mapui?P=YVR-FRU/ This route would not be evident from looking at a Mercator projection of the globe, as used by Google Maps, but it is in fact the shortest route.
