My first Senator guess didn't work. Glad I tried another.

MLB (in its infinite wisdom) has rendered this statistic utterly meaningless going forward, by not allowing starting pitchers to play (for even one lousy inning of work) if they saw action on the Sunday before the All-Star game. That's why we won't be seeing Verlander, Sabathia, or several other top pitchers in the All Star game tonight.

Very surprised at the names that are missing. Were Seaver, Carlton, Ryan, and Gibson just better in the second half of the season than the first?

I have no idea how to make quizzes. How about list all AL & NL starting pitchers since 1980?

This quiz shows that using all-star game starts was never a good way of judging players. It has always been meaningless. The real importance of MLB's directive is to show that the All Star game really is an EXHIBITION game and is MEANINGLESS. IT DOES NOT COUNT.

It may have been meaningless as a way of judging players' overall careers, but it was, at the least, consistent. The All Star starters were consistently the best (more or less) starting pitchers in the first half of the season. But with the new rule in place, the first choice for starter has a good chance of being completely eliminated from consideration.

@Blimpyboy: while I share your frustration, it's really the individual teams who don't want their pitchers starting on Sunday and then pitching again on Tuesday. If a starter really wanted to do it I don't think anyone could stop them. I wish guys would look at the ASG as an honor, but most of the time when a guy misses the ASG it's because he and his team don't want to jeopardize a regular season game(s) for the sake of an exhibition.

A lot of guys would prefer to spend time with their families during the All-Star break than play. Can't say I blame them. Its a LONG season.

Well because it's simply the best pitcher (quoted) at the halfway point. Not the entire season.

actually, drysdale has a career eraof 3.07 in the first half of the season, and 2.80 in the second half. its ALWAYS been a popularity contest, plain and simple.

I got so stuck on Vida Blue, that I couldn't begin to get some of the others I missed. I tried Carlton, Seaver, even Perry, Sutton and Niekro. I forgot just how great Blue was.
