if you're going to accept 49ers than why not 76ers? The Phillies were originally named for people from philadelphia not the horse.

49ers are what the gold rush miners were called (came over in 1849), and those miners are the team's namesake. The 76ers are named after the year 1776, when the Declaration of Independence was signed, not any particular group of people.

Couldn't you say the 76ers are the people of '76, like those who signed the Declaration? I know there aren't any people on the official merchandise, but it makes logical sense to say that Ben Franklin et al. were the "76-ers." Should be a bonus at least.

"knicks" is short for "knickerbockers" which is a term used for "new yorker"...parallel to the canucks/canadiens type deal. knicks should be on the list
