| Number 9 on 1870's list is one of the more tragic boomtown stories. Indianola was on the coast southeast of Victoria, and grew quickly in the 1870s, thriving on commerce. However, its coastal location would be its downfall, and in 1875 a hurricane came ashore right over Indianola, devastating the town. The survivors rebanded, and although the population was smaller in the 1880 Census, the city was slowly coming back. That steady recovery was shattered by an even worse storm in 1886 that ruined the townsite and drove away the settlers for good. Today, what was once Indianola lies in shallow water in Matagorda Bay. |
