The New York MSA is used here, excluding Trenton, Poughkeepsie, and southwest Connecticut. New Jersey townships and New York villages (two before 1900 and one in 1960-1970) ARE included; New York towns are not. Each borough is a bonus answer from 1900 on for comparison, but I can remove them if this quiz is too cluttered.

I wonder why New York did a better job of incorporating its suburbs and ending up with a decent city area (c. 300 sq. mi.) than did the other old Eastern cities?

@chriskotx: 300 sq. mi. is a decent city area? Maybe in Texas, but not in the Northeast! In the Northeast, cities are much more densely populated, so more people can fit in a smaller area. We don't need 300 sq. mi. cities up here. With the exception of NYC, no major cities in NY, NJ, or New England are more than 50 sq. mi.

Lack of Long Island is amazing.

@BiloxiSean: that is due to Long Island being almost completely covered by a maze of unincorporated areas. Both Nassau and Suffolk Counties have similar populations to the Bronx individually or Brooklyn combined, but a grand total of two incorporated cities, both under 35,000. While I do include New York state villages, they tend to be tiny, with dozens in either of the Long Island counties. One makes these lists (the famed Levittown), and Hempstead comes close.

As someone from New Jersey, the idea of Brick and Toms River being in any way related to New York, even tangentially, is hilarious to me.

Levittown is not an incorporated place.
