Key West was the largest city in Florida before 1900. Miami only had a 2 decade reign as the state's largest city. Veeeeeerrry interesting.

From what I understand, the population growth in Florida coincided with the popularity of air conditioning.

Interesting that the early cities (with the exception of Key West) were in the northern part of the state. At first blush that might appear to support MMayes correlation with air conditioning, but in the summertime, it's actually cooler down on the coast than in places like Lake City, Gainesville and Palatka.

A lot of the American soldiers who fought in the Spanish American War were stationed in Tampa before heading to Cuba, which helped Tampa grow from a small town to a city. After the war, word of mouth promoted Central and Southern Floridan as a nice area to live. Or at least that is my recollection from my eighth grade Florida history class. Although I doubt the popularity of air conditioners hurt the growth in Florida either...

Wow. I'm a native-born Floridian (Orlando), and yet I somehow forget Gainesville, Palatka, and St. Petersburg!

Thank you, Sporcle, for the publish! Florida is such a fascinating state because aside from Jacksonville, there is such a sharp jump from the small, agricultural or military towns of the 1800s to the booming cities and suburbs of the 1900s. I admire anyone who can fill out one of the 19th century lists after 1850.

Tampa nets you Tampa and West Tampa but Palm Beach does not get you West Palm Beach? Boo

@myitbos: I had West Tampa go with Tampa since it was annexed by the larger city, but West Palm Beach is still a separate city. I get what you mean though, and if I could change it to be accepted, I would.

With quizzes like these, my goal is to see a solid block green in the stats, meaning that the only ones I missed were the same ones everybody else missed too.

As a native-born-and-raised Floridian, I'm ashamed to have missed Ocala and Lakeland. Also, as a native-born-and-raised Floridian, lol @ Lake Butler making the top ten ever.

The reason South Florida was so sparsely populated in the 1800s and 1900s is partially due to the lack of AC, but mostly due to the fact that the soil in Central and South Florida is very sandy and not good for farming, so it was not where people wanted to settle.
