When I was assembling this quiz, I found a few surprises: Adrian popping up in 1860 and 1870 before vanishing, the two Detroit enclaves showing up mid-century, and how quickly the Detroit suburbs dominate this list after World War II.

This is a great series. You should definitely continue it.

I'm planning to. The next two are Illinois (almost done) and Pennsylvania.

Clinton isn't a city. There is a Village of Clinton, but it has less than 3000 people.

@BoomRShine: It is clearly stated in the instructions that charter townships are included. Clinton happens to be the biggest charter township in Michigan, and the only one that makes the list.

And if Clinton is excluded (and Canton Township as well), then Westland stays in tenth place through 2010.

Monroe incorporated as city in 1837, so where is Monroe in 1840? Kalamazoo wasn't a city until 1883 (it was a village from 1838 to 1883). If you are including villages, where is Kalamazoo in 1840? The area that was to become Grand Rapids incorporated as the the Village of Kent in 1838, so where is Kent in 1840? Ann Arbor was incorporated as a village in 1833, so where is Ann Arbor in 1840 and 1850? Ypsilanti incorporated as a village in 1832, so where is Ypsilanti in 1840 and 1850?

To all of the above: too small. If a town isn't over 2,000 people, I don't stick it on here, as in the earliest days of an area's settlement, several small towns would be established and then fade away. Putting a cutoff of 2,000 people in cuts down on my chances of overlooking a former frontier town that faded away, as towns that reached that size tended to last. If you want to go dig through the 1840 Census in search of obscure towns of 500, be my guest.

Largest cities and village in Michigan in 1850: Detroit 21,019 Monroe 2,813 Grand Rapids 2,686 Kalamazoo 2,507 Jackson 2,363 Marshall 1,972 Pontiac 1,681 Flint 1,670 Port Huron 1,584 Mount Clemens 1,302 None of the last five faded away. They are all fairly prominent and well known to this day. But, hey...

Alright, that's as complete a set of data as the Census Bureau has. I'll go update the other quizzes now. But I'll also discontinue this series, so California is the last state.

@Dralcoffin: Please continue the series. I am enjoying it, and I think it is very interesting. Just ignore BoomRShine's complaining.

@SomeoneRandom: I don't think BoomR's complaining, just being a stickler for detail. I'll keep the series going, so expect more soon.

Heh. I knew about Hamtramck but I thought the two M's were together.

I've redone the color scheme to be more visually pleasing and to have more of a Michigan touch. Sorry, East Lansing. Also, I know the Upper Peninsula is empty, but having Bay City be the northernmost city on this list is still surprising.
