| Townships were a judgement call on this one. On one hand, several townships like Edison and Irvington act more like cities (and technically Orange is a township although the Census back then calls it a city). On the other, allowing townships mean the mid 1800s have several bizarre places (Van Vorst, anyone?) on the list and five townships in 2010 (Woodbridge, Hamilton, etc.) muscling their way ahead of Trenton. Due to the little-known ones of the mid 1800s, I decided to kick them all off the list, except the City of Orange Township which I could go either way on. |
