Oh, no need to feel dumb. It's just a chord progression that is extremely common in popular music. I'm not sure how else to explain it, but here is a video highlighting this (which, in fact was one of my sources): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qHBVnMf2t7w

Take the key of C for example. The I-V-vi-IV would be C-G-Am-F. In G, it would be G-D-Em-C.
