Another small thing: (1) There was actually no Great Britain until 1707, when Queen Anne selected the Union Jack to be the official flag of the new Union of the Kingdoms of England and Scotland... And (2) in 1606, King James only required the Navy's ships to fly the new flag (the superimposition of the St. George's Cross, the flag of England, over St. Andrew's Cross, the flag of Scotland) to recognize that he was personally the king of each separate country. It wasn't until 1707 when the Union Flag (A "Jack" is properly only a navy flag) became the national flag in any case. And it wasn't until 1801, when the flag of St. Patrick's Cross was added when the Act of Union formally added the Kingdom of Ireland to the 1707 union of the crowns of England and Scotland: This is when the current Union Jack was created. |
