| @Dirtc: what confused me was to look at a map of Oceania that shows boundaries on the sea, and there Tuvalu appears as having portions of ocean both east and west of the meridian of 180ยบ. The same happens with Kiribati. The difference is that Kiribati has islands both east and west of the meridian, and Tuvalu only has islands west of it. But then, if the criterion for saying that a country is "crossed" by the 180th meridian is that it has some portions of land east and some west of it, why not New Zealand? I see that the main islands of N.Z. are west of the meridian, but others like Chatham and Kermadec islands are east of it. Or do you consider Chatham and Kermadec as "dependencies" of N.Z., and therefore you say that the country isn't crossed by the meridian? |
