| I'm aware of the definition, but the fact remains that at least to my ears, the 'j' sound in schedule is definitely a hard [dʒ] and not the [ʒ] of leisure or Asian. There's a noticeable difference in the sequence of [d] and [dʒ] in schedule than in just [dʒ]. Say "schedule" and then "Jay" (I'm very used to hearing the latter for reasons my username should imply.) I can tell an audible difference, that being that the [d] before the [dʒ] in 'schedule' is prominent, and furthermore I can feel my tongue doing different things. I call it awkward and silly because it's not long enough, as you said, to deserve a [ddʒ] transcription; however, it's not short enough, in my estimation, to get away with just [dʒ]. |
