| I find the layout and the instructions self-explanatory enough and English is not even my mother tongue. Some words are definitely unknown to me, either in English or African languages, but with 11/18 I think I did fine (even though I could have thought harder to find cola, mojo, mumbo-jumbo and yam). This is a very interesting quiz. Congratulations.
I know for sure from my tango teacher and friend tangeros y tangeras, that the roots of the word tango are African. There was a significant black African community descended from slavery in Argentina in the XIXth century, which gradually diminished. It greatly influenced the birth of tango (name, music/rhythm and dance). Etymologically, there are different explanations but all related to slavery and/or African languages. Yet, what is so peculiar with tango is that it's a mix of many things: from Eastern Europe to West Africa, via Germany, Italy, Spain. |
