While it is easy to see where the "deer" comes from when looking at them, they are not what one usually thinks of when hearing the word "deer", and as far as I know they've been classified in different genera since very early if not always. Meanwhile, the three hares were considered subspecies of the same species until the '70s and still show up as such in some manuals.
In a way, the deer thing is similar to why that other answer doesn't accept just 'ape' or 'monkey' but does accept them when preceded by the geographic term. I'll add macaque, though. |
