Good Quiz, but I think you should accept Agana for the Guam location, since that is the technical name of the airport.

Ok, the close one must be Alaska. Hmmmm, not Anchorage, not Juneau, not Fairbanks, where else could it be....oh, I see.

Guam being as guessed the least surprised me. Either people don't know about Guam or how close it is to Japan, or they weren't looking at the column that listed the distances.

The quiz ought to include Hagatna as the location instead of Guam. Guam could be an acceptable answer, but the airport serves Hagatna and is basically part of the city (only 3 miles out).

You should also accept George Bush for Houston since the airport is named for him (GHWB).

@Azrael: Yeah, or they just didn't consider airports outside of the 50 states. Not that big of a stretch.

As someone who was born and raised in Guam, I think you guys are way off base. Hagatna (formerly Agana) is the capital of the territory, but no one on the island would ever say that it was the location of the airport.

Good point @truckee. I am from Michigan and the Detroit airport is actually in the city of Romulus. No one would ever say Romulus.

Yet strangely, Seatac Airport is indeed in the "synthetic" city of SeaTac, halfway between Seattle and Tacoma. Though not sure everyone knows that--when they say Seatac, they mean the airport. If you're from 100 miles away or more, it's "Seattle." If local, "Seatac."

@maxpower- delta flew seasonally to narita from SLC the past couple summers after the merger with northwest but they suspended this route and have no plans to resume it in the near future.

Guam is not a city. Correctly named locations maybe, instead of cities? or just cities and territories?

The airport code is GUM. Its secondary name (after Antonio B. Won Pat Airport) is Guam International Airport. It is listed on Delta.com and Expedia.com as Guam. Please don't be pedantic just for the sake of it.

Remember that the earth is round. The shortest distance from most U.S. locations to Japan passes through the Arctic Circle, hence why northern locations on both coasts are closer.

Why do you only accept Bos, Sea, and Atl instead of the actual city?
DarkPhalanx

Because those are the airport codes (IATA) of Boston, Seattle, and Atlanta and every quiz involving airports should accept IATA codes

@ChicagoGuy: IATA Airport codes are accepted in lieu of city. Boston Seattle and Atlanta are the only cities on this list where the airport code happens to be the first 3 letters of the city. Also, take dave's advice. It will really help with the airport that has an asterisk next to it.

"Boston's further north and flights to Tokyo go over the pole" Sure... But it's not like NY is closer longitudinally either... timbuktututoo must have thought NY was further north - which it isn't, but it's close...

The Boston route isn't starting for two more days (the 22 of April). If you're going to include Boston, you should also include San Jose and San Diego and bonuses since there is also future service from Tokyo planned to those airports.

Thought process - Hm, closer than Hawaii. Maybe Guam? But I have no idea what the name of the airport in Guam is...well, I'll try it anyway. Yay!

Should Guam really count as an answer here? It's a US territory, but not part of the US. You should, at least, clarify this in the quiz description.

The only reason I got Guam is because the quiz instructed me to look at the first comment for abbreviation explanations, and the first visible comment had the word "Guam" in it. I never would have thought of it otherwise.

I sure hope Delta doesn't cancel direct flights between Detroit and major Asian cities. I haven't flown to Tokyo, but I've been on flights to and from Beijing and Hong Kong; all four flights were practically empty.
