I am a big fan of this series. :]

A View to a Kill didn't get a major US release?

Oh it did, I must have just left it out. Thanks Dummo

i don't think Heaven's Gate is a traditional anything
Jun 4th, 2012 at 16:13 GMT
Traditional meaning set in the old west. There was a lot of anger over me not including No Country for Old Men in the similar quiz I made for the 00s and so I added "traditional" to defuse arguments.
Jun 4th, 2012 at 17:56 GMT
@dark - I understand the wall you ran into with the "western" vs. "traditional western" labels. I guessed "Silverado", which is on the one hand traditional and on the other bucks tradition (though maybe anything the involves bucking could also be considered a western). Anyway, good quiz--definitely room for another from the 80s with a bunch of different categories, though I sympathize with how much work it must take to enter EVERY possibility for some of these categories.

Great quiz. Although I feel I should've gotten all of them
Jun 5th, 2012 at 19:33 GMT
Venom and Vamp both received wide releases.
Jun 5th, 2012 at 20:20 GMT
How about the Stallone classic "Victory?" It satisfies two of the questions.

I came here to kick ass and chew bubble gum...and sadly, I was too busy chewing bubble gum to think of a John Carpenter movie. Darnit.

@Tahnan: That was the first John Carpenter movie I thought of. Excellent quiz!!!!!!

Didn't know Heaven's Gate was a western and didn't think of Silverado. Were there any other 80s Westerns? Probably the nadir of the Hollywood western it seems.

"Vacation" was a 1983 major U.S. release that starts with V...
Jun 10th, 2012 at 18:11 GMT
Not that it's any good, but isn't "Never Say Never Again" a movie starring James Bond? It was released in 1983.
Jun 10th, 2012 at 18:19 GMT
@joshindc: The film's full title is "National Lampoon's Vacation," so it shouldn't count.
Jun 10th, 2012 at 18:21 GMT
@jtrichey I used Young Guns for western.
Jun 10th, 2012 at 18:21 GMT
I couldn't think of a movie beginning with V while doing the quiz but "Victory" (known as Escape to Victory here in Britain) would be one. What other Oscar nominated movies was Jack Nicholson in other than Terms of Endearment?
Jun 10th, 2012 at 18:35 GMT
Would love to see all the answers to each question, perhaps posted here by the author?

As a joke, I said "Rhinestone" and got credit. Shouldnta...
Jun 10th, 2012 at 19:07 GMT
Never Say Never Again is an "unofficial" Bond and thus excluded. Vacation was indeed excluded because of the "National Lampoon" prefix. Victory is accepted, and no I can't post all the answers, because once a quiz is published you can't edit it or see your work, and there's no way I'm looking them all up again :)
Jun 10th, 2012 at 19:13 GMT
Damn you, Woody Allen!
Jun 10th, 2012 at 19:49 GMT
I was going with Victor/Victoria, but it stopped me at Victor. I think Terms of Endearment is the only Nicholson movie in the 80's he was nominated for, but I could be wrong.
Jun 10th, 2012 at 20:10 GMT
Jeez people, have you heard of google? Reds, Terms of Endearment, Prizzi's Honor, Ironweed. I wouldn't have put it on if there was only one
Jun 10th, 2012 at 22:12 GMT
I guess "Harrison Ford Telling Random People He Wants His Family Back" was released later.
Jun 10th, 2012 at 22:53 GMT
'Never Say Never Again' fully satisfies the clue criterion and should therefore be accepted. The fact that it was made without the imprimatur of the Saltzman/Broccoli production company is a technicality and has nothing to do with the fact that the film "featured James Bond."
Jun 10th, 2012 at 23:57 GMT
@PhiloKGB: If you hadn't said it, I was going to. "Never Say Never Again" should absolutely be an acceptable answer based on the clue.
Jun 11th, 2012 at 02:32 GMT
To save anyone else from looking it up - Apocalypse Now was released in '79...grr... :)
Jun 11th, 2012 at 05:23 GMT
Isn't First Blood one of Stallone's most famous films? How could almost two thirds of people not get that category?
Jun 11th, 2012 at 06:26 GMT
On the front page it says, "In the 80's all we had were Hammer pants...", Hammer pants were totaly 90's. "Please Hammer, Don't Hurt 'Em" was released in 1990. I know it seems trivial, but that's why we're here. Now if we're talking 'Parachute Pants', those were most definately 80's.
Jun 11th, 2012 at 10:26 GMT
I see the point about Never Say Never Again, but I'm not going to change it. On Sporcle, only canonical Bond films are ever included. If I relented, it could cause a chain reaction that led to Scotland and Palestine being considered countries :)
Jun 11th, 2012 at 12:03 GMT
@DarkPhalanx, in which case the clue should be changed to something like "is an official James Bond film". Only a technicality though, as there are plenty more to choose from.
Jun 11th, 2012 at 13:50 GMT
@Absentia - Because people are forgetting that is what it's called and just thinking "damn, Rambo starts with an 'R' too"
Jun 12th, 2012 at 17:56 GMT
I'll add my voice to the Never Say Never Again chorus. It's fine if you don't want to include it, but in that case the question needs to be changed.
I used Pale Rider for the western question.
I was in the process of typing in Victor, Victoria for the V question but the answer popped up when I got to Victor. Was that intentional? There does not seem to be a 1980s film called Victor that would fit the question.
Jun 13th, 2012 at 00:14 GMT
@Moviegoer: I was worried I was running out of room with my "V" answers so I shortened a few of them, thinking that only people who intended Victor/Victoria would type in "Victor"
Jun 26th, 2012 at 22:02 GMT
Thoughts on Tron being included as a film released by Disney animation? I know it's not the traditional Disney animated film, but there was some serious animation (however crude it may have been) involved in the making of the film.
Jun 27th, 2012 at 19:06 GMT
Reasonable point Brett, but I want to stick to the canon
Jun 28th, 2012 at 05:13 GMT
No problem, just thought I'd raise the point. Great quiz though.
