| Elizabeth was not the last monarch of England- that honor would go to Anne, who stopped being both the monarch of England and Scotland, and instead became the monarch of Great Britain. James VI is known as James I because he is remembered primarily as an English monarch, not a Scottish monarch, despite reigning much longer in Scotland. There has not been a James since the Act of Union in 1707, but if there were, you can be sure he would be James VIII of the United Kingdom, and a Robert would be Robert IV of the United Kingdom. Of course, who knows what Prince William might name his first child, but it's unlikely we'll get a David, Constantine, Robert, or James to test this theory on. |
