| The centrality value here is a measure of how close each US state is on average to all other states. By close, I don't mean actual distance. Instead, I mean in terms of the fewest number of states one must pass through to get from one nation to another. To get from Texas to New Mexico, you of course only cross 1 state border. To get from Texas to Arizona, you must go through New Mexico first (2 borders). To get from Texas to California, you go through New Mexico and Arizona first (3 borders). So you figure out the minimum number of steps it takes to get to every other state from Texas, average the number of steps per state, and you get the centrality value. Texas is on average 3.851 steps away from every state in the contiguous 48. (Remember that the lower the centrality value, the more central a state is.) Repeat for each state. Alaska and Hawaii are excluded because they don't border any other US states. |
