I don't think you thought you didn't have it. If you couldn't you wouldn't and shouldn't... I dare say you mustn't have not missed it. I can't see why you aren't feeling that you hadn't added it, except that maybe it needn't oughtn't not be there. Isn't that what you wanted all along? What... doesn't that not make no sense?

You don't have to be so negative . . . .

Yeah, I would say that most people nowadays don't use oughtn't, mightn't, needn't, mustn't (the 4 I didn't get), plus some others like maybe shan't, anymore. I agree with DJC83, I've never even *heard of* oughtn't and mustn't.

I have never heard about the bonus answer amn't. Even on sentences like "He's here, isn't he?" it's like "I'm here, aren't I?" (don't know the exact grammatical term.) The uncommon ones, plus the ones we mostly can't find, are the old fashioned ones. Even "shall" is not used anymore, almost only used by personal preference-like me...I love that word.

Well, I have to say, I'm pleasantly surprised amn't is actually a word (though I'm a bit disappointed - I've been using it my whole life to use a word that I thought wasn't in the dictionary...)

Not sure what EAniag's talking about. "Mustn't" is borderline common.

I think this is partly a dialect thing, all those ones EAniag mentions are reasonably common here in the UK but perhaps not in the US.

I say needn't, mightn't, and mustn't on occasion. I'm in the U.S. Seriously, if you read even in the slightest, you should know these words.

@thisisaname is correct: "ain't" was originally the correct contraction for "am not." Someone at some point decided it was improper, so now it is generally considered incorrect (or, at the very least, informal).

Am not="ain't"... yeah, it got the axe in proper circles. I felt way cool when the bonus answer mayn't showed up upon my sheepish guess of that word. Yeah, like others, how did I get mustn't, shan't, etc. but I somehow forgot AREN'T!? Great quiz, I found it via a search to see if anyone had done this yet.

Personally, I think the (uncommon) bonus answers should be promoted to full answers, since they are English words that can form contractions with not, no matter how uncommon they are. Also, "daren't" is actually quite common where I live in England.

I was under the impression that usen't (As in, I usen't to do that, contraction from I used not to do that) was common. Heard this a bunch in New England. Let these and the other "uncommon" one fly! Language mustn't be static!

As a math teacher I feel like many of these could be put on motivational posters in my classroom, because of the way the arrows in the answers look like greater-than signs. Example: "Can > can't". Short and to-the-point!

@Benwins: the symbology in linguistics is different from that used in mathematics. < means "comes from" while > means "evolved to". For example, peace < Latin pax (or, conversely, Latin pax > peace).

Some of these words are sketchy and aren't commonly used. At least, not in modern America, and I have little experience with other English-speaking countries so far. About the only place I've seen words like "oughtn't" and "shan't" is in Shakespeare and such.

Try as I might, my double contractions just aren't catching on. I shouldn't've expected them too, but at the same time I couldn't've kept such versatile words to myself. Or if you really want some class, try using a triple contraction: "I'dn't've seen that coming!"
