| @lambda: Thanks for the catch. Wikipedia fails me again. It had Guadeloupe as the westernmost point and Reunion as the easternmost point. Still, I should have caught it. I've revised the span for France; its westernmost point is now Avon Isles in New Caledonia and its easternmost point is Amsterdam Island in the French Southern and Antartic Lands. These two points are 279.41 degrees of longitude apart. The Prime Meridian (and by extension the International Date Line) is an arbitrary center line for longitude, so I don't use either line as a divider between east and west. Rather, I just record the smallest span of longitude which encompasses France and all of its dependencies. Using Futuna as the westernmost point and Mare as the easternmost point, the span for France would be larger (about 346 degrees). If a small island country happened to straddle the International Date Line, you wouldn't say that it spans almost 360 degrees when it's really less than 1 degree wide. |
