| @ abanazerb: Istanbul did launch bids for 2000, 2004, 2008, and 2012 - but they only made the shortlist as official candidate cities in 2000 and 2008. Rio's 2016 candidacy marked the first time it made it onto the candidacy phase but the 2016 bid was its third overall bid (it failed to make the shortlist in 2004 and 2012).
It's interesting that if this quiz was expanded to include all cities that submitted bids but had to drop out or were unsuccessful at being accepted as official candidates, you'd see places like Tashkent, Brasilia, Doha, Baku, Bangkok, Kuala Lumpur, Lille, San Juan, and Milan included in this list. :) |
