Just a note on the note: "Many of these schools are still in the transition period between Division II and Division I" - some are, others are in transition from NAIA Division I to NCAA Division I.

Some of these schools (Pan Am, SSU, CSU) have been around too long not to be in a conference. Conversely, I wonder when the NCAA will finally put a cap on the number of DI schools. It's getting ridiculous.

Pan Am was in a conference until the mid 90's (sun belt was the most recent). they were kicked out officially because of NCAA violations, but unofficially (and the real reason) is it is expensive to travel to Edinburg Texas (tip of texas). anyway, with that said, starting next year there is a new D1 conference called the "Great West" (that already plays football) and Pan Am is a member. they will not get an automatic NCAA bid for at least 5 years (if they get one). The dakotas and utah valley have also joined.

Chicago State used to be in the Mid-Continent conference (now the Summit League), also. Not sure why they dropped, although they were pretty much always the last-place finisher, which probably didn't help.

@Patrick: i'd love to hear the explanation for why Notre Dame (Big East), Army, Navy (both Patriot League), and Temple (Atlantic 10) are independents for basketball. Good luck with that one.

Whats funny about Patrick's comment is not only that those are the football independents, but in football, Temple is not independent, they are in the MAC.

If possible, you might want to update this quiz. There are, as of the 10-11 season, 14 independent teams.
