| I agree that WAR isn't the whole story (and Fangraphs and Baseball-Reference even have different values for it), but I think it's the best single number to use and I'd rather go by numbers than make someone try to guess an opinion. But I'm glad that, warts and all, you enjoyed the quiz. __ McGwire and McGriff surprised me too. McGriff had 26.8 from 88-93, good for seventh, and just ahead of Barry Larkin (someone I expected to see). McGwire had 29.6 and 28.6 - he just happened to have his peak at a time when a lot of guys were putting together amazing stats (probably a reason for that). He wasn't much of a defensive player, and played an offensive position, but what also hurt him was durability - he never topped 698 games played over five years, and those 112 games of lost productivity take a toll. |
