It's worth mentioning that all of these metropolitan areas, except for the last, have a higher population than at least one other metropolitan area with a major sports franchise.

Lame using MSA instead of CSA. Riverside-SB is certainly part of the greater LA area in practice.

By your source, Raleigh, NC should be included as it has a larger population than the lowest one.. Also, agree with Shoban. Would be much better using CSA instead of MSA.

@bernerd, raleigh has the Carolina Hurricanes so beans is still on with that, but i also prefer CSA over MSA

CoolBeans, Rochester, NY is a bigger metropolitan area than Green Bay, WI, so even it is larger than one metropolitan area with a sports franchise.

Very hard to think about it the opposite way cause most of my knowledge about the US Cities comes from the major sports teams.

I used metro areas because in terms of establishing a franchise, your marketing it to the entire area around a city instead of just the population in the city. And the inland empire is close to LA but it is defined as a separate metro area and then you'd also have to get into a debate as to which of these areas are "too close" to a metro area with a sports franchise which would make things too messy and subjective. @andrew I guess I didn't scroll down the list enough to see Green Bay. So yeah, all of these poor cities have no professional sports while a lesser city does. =(

How come every sporcle sports quiz throws shame on the MLS (major league soccer, if anyone's heard of it). There is no world series for American football, it's not an Olympic sport, and thus no national team, but soccer is. Though none of these citeis on this quiz have MLS teams.

Oh Virginia Beach-Norfolk, with your many minor league teams and almost major leagues that slipped through your fingers (the Grizzlies, the Nats). Once a bridesmaid...

@Geo_Crazy That's just how the other sporcle quizzes tend to do things. None of these places have an MLS team either though.

"san bernadino" isn't accepted. And even though they aren't major league, the IE66ers rule

@Geo_Crazy: because it's nowhere near as popular as the big four leagues? Anyway, this is a great quiz with definite front page potential. Might be nice to expand it to 15 or 20 answers, though (or maybe until you hit the population of Green Bay?)

@shawnoc: That's because it's spelled San Bernardino. I definitely thought it was spelt San Bernadino for quite a while though so I know where you're coming from. @swellwrench: I'm definitely open to adding more metro areas if it's kosher to add answers after a quiz goes live. I'm thinking ten or five more but not until Green Bay because that's at like 300,000.

riverside-san bernardino is part of the L.A. area You can say whatever you want, but they are suburbs of L.A. It's just like defining Aurora-Naperville (suburbs of Chicago) as a separate metro area

it's not just the size of the city, there has to be a market for a team (Phoenix Coyotes, LA Kings, Florida Marlins)

Why is Riverside a separate MSA from Los Angeles? I know the area is huge but it sprung from metro LA and should be included, in my opinion.

How is Albany, NY more populated than El Paso, or San Jose? This makes no sense whatsoever.
