Religulous wasn't a documentary; it was Bill Maher doing his stand-up act.

Check out Touching the Void if you haven't seen it, it's a pretty interesting account of mountain climbing gone awry.

Since we're talking about highest-grossing documentaries, it would be nice to see the dollar amount of how much these films grossed.

also, say what you will about Michael Moore, but Bowling For Columbine and Roger And Me are legitimate important films.

Jackass is classifiable, I think, as a "reality" movie, like a reality TV show. It's not a documentary in any sense of the word. Also, nice to see so many Michael Moore films up here, as well as Hoop Dreams. It's a shame, tho, that Errol Morris films make so little money.

Jackass, based on the same site, took in (I refuse to say "earned") $64 million at the box-office. That would put it third on this list.

Michael Bay will eventually make this list, once history judges that Transformers 2 was actually a step-by-step instructional film on how to make a terrible movie.

Breaking my own rule... zwieblekopf, that has got to be the dumbest response in the history of responses. It's like if I praise someone for saving someone's life, and you say, "Oh, he's still going to die sometime. You didn't really save his life." Conservatives, ladies and gentlemen.

Michael Moore hatred is just so boring. While he is overweight (which apparently is a valid insult against a filmmaker) and biased, his documentaries are usually informative and entertaining, and in the case of 'Sicko', even emotional.

A lot of these wouldn't have gotten made if Michael Moore hadn't proved documentaries could be profitable. I don't get the M.M. hating. Yes, he can be abrasive and over the top in making his points, but he makes entertaining and thought provoking films on subjects more people should be fired up about. His personality (and esp. his appearance - that's just juvenile bringing that up) don't negate that. Fun quiz even though I did horribly. I missed 9 of the films I've seen!!

I wish enough people would see Errol Morris's documentaries to push them onto a list like this. Everything he's done has been amazing.

Michael Moore is also an extremist, that's what they do. They find a way to voice their opinion. People who don't agree are obviously going to hate him. Whether right or wrong he brings a lot of very important issues to the table. Shoves them in your face so you have to acknowledge them! Makes you THINK.

Notice how Michael Moore is the Leni Riefenstahl of the left? Riefenstahl would not be known if it wasn't for the Nazis. Moore would not be know if not for the Progressives. And neither would ACORN.

Regardless of political viewpoint, director's who have no integrity and manipulate the film medium to distort the truth should be denounced. The fact that Moore's films are puerile is another story altogether.

You can tell the political views of the majority of sporclers when every comment opposing Michael Moore has a negative rating. My hypothesis is that most sporclers are either teachers, or other people who can't make it in the real world but like to think they're smart. Hence the liberal views.

I find it hilarious that Michael Moore makes a movie blasting capitalism, but has made so much money from his movies.
