Great quiz, but you shouldn't really use abbreviated names!! Otherwise, I enjoyed the quiz.

I love the quiz, but all of the sports are in alphabetical order, except the MLB.

Cool quiz. Agree that the abbreviated ones shouldn't count...just because we got too lazy to say the entire name doesn't mean it should count. And Wild is so one syllable!

In most parts of the country, "Wild" is treated as a two-syllable word.

I don't have a problem with the Knicks and Mets being on here because that is the only name we ever hear for them. But the A's jerseys still say "Athletics" on them.

why do you accept "Avs" for Avalanche and "Knicks" for Knickerbockers but not leafs, habs, bolts, canes etc for which (respectively) the Maple Leafs, Canadiens, Lightning and Hurricanes are better known?

These were mostly alphabetized by team name, which was a big help, but the Minnesota Twins are out of order, which completely threw me for a loop.

Since we're giving bonuses for nicknames - Dallas "Mavs" (et al?), shouldn't the Montreal "Habs" fall into that category? I'm just sayin'.

I guess at some point I have to commit to memory that the baseball team in Tampa is no longer the Devil Rays. This is like the 4th time I've missed them because of that.

The official nickname of the Mets is just the Mets. No asterisk should apply. There should be one for the Knickerbockers though.

I agree, the Mets don't need an asterisk, but the As do since they are (once again) officially named the "Athletics".

If the one-syllable dimiutives are going to be bonuses, you need to add "Cards" (St Louis in baseball, Arizona in football) and "Nats" (Washington, baseball).

Wow a few people behind the times on the Ducks and Rays name changes. I don't know if there are still bonus answers with nicknames like Avs, but if there are they probably shouldn't be there. Go with the official names, because as someone else said, most teams have 1 syllable nicknames.

For those who think Wild has 2 syllables, it only does for people who mis-pronounce it as "Why-uld". I can say just about every team name as Forest Gump would ("Cu-ubs") but that wouldn't make it right.

Speaking of the Cubs, the Ducks and Rays both made it to their respective championship series in the first season with their shortened names, with the Ducks winning. Maybe the Cubs should change their name to the Chicago Cs. See what happens. Couldn't hurt after 100+ years of futility, right?

@refwen: While the name "Mets" is a shortened form of "Metropolitans", the official name of the team is METS. At one time it had an official corporate name of "Metropolitan Baseball Club of New York", but the team name itself has always been "New York METS". There should not be an asterisk.

The Mets have been officially/legally named the 'Mets' since 62. Mets is just short for Metropolitans, but there should be no asterisk since their actual name is the Mets.

I live in New York and root more the Mets and the Knicks. NO ONE reffers to them as the Metropolitans or the Knickerbockers. And further more, their uniforms don't say Metropolitans or Knickerbockers, they say Mets and Knicks.
