The list does NOT include for-profit institutions, though some listed institutions enroll a large number of students online. All enrollment data is from the National Center for Education Statistics (part of the U.S. Department of Education).

CLP: Great quiz idea. I was going to name it a featured quiz, but I could not follow your source. How did you get this list? Also, Please make GW and George Washington alternative answers for George Washington University and Wash U an alternative answer for Washington University. You have Villanova as an answer for Nos. 60 and 61. I assume this is not correct.

I corrected the GW, Wash U and Villanova issues. As far as the link, I tweaked it a bit, but the link doesn't go to a direct list. The site is a education statistics search engine through the Dept. of Ed. The link goes to a list of all private higher ed institutions in the US. I clicked the export link on the top to create an excel sheet, and just sorted by student enrollment. Unfortunately, the link doesn't go right to a list. If there is something else I can do to improve this situation, feel free to let me know.

Love the idea, but there's too much inconsistency when it comes to nicknames. For example, you have to type out "George Washington University" and "Southern Methodist University" instead of just using the first two words of each name, which you can do for virtually all other responses. As others have noted, some abbreviations don't work. (A common one to include: Wash U or WUSTL for Washington University in St. Louis.) Once you iron out kinks like that, I think you're all set. :)

i love how PITT's cathedral of learning is the picture on the main page for this quiz and its not even a private university. but it's taken from carnegie mellon so i guess it makes some sense. good quiz nonetheless.

It took me about fifteen seconds to figure out why it wouldn't take UNC-Chapel Hill...D'oh! Great quiz, though; I really enjoyed it! I'd even venture syaing that it's one of the hardest I've played in a while.

Of all the schools in Virginia, Liberty is the one I wouldn't have ever guessed. It's the biggest but has just about the worst academics of all the VA schools.

I'm not sure that this is accurate. I go to Cornell and know for a fact that it is the largest Ivy League school. Why are Harvard, UPenn, and Columbia ahead of it? Unless maybe this counts total students (undergrad, grad, law, etc) and Cornell only counts undergrad or vice versa?

It doesn't accept Saint Joseph's, which is strange because that's the name that actually comes up in the answer. Could you accept just "Boston" instead of having to type out "Boston University"? I realize this will give a freebie if you try to guess BC first, but I think that's fair given that you don't have to type out "Harvard University", etc. Also, why does "Loyola" only bring up Loyola-Chicago? When I got that I didn't even bother trying Loyola-Marymount because I thought it would have come up too. Fun quiz, though.

The term "Rank" is deceiving because colleges are ranked. You can clearly see they are in order from the enrollment numbers.

Thanks for all of the accepted versions. Everytime I tried an abbreviation (NYU, TCU, BYU, BC, BU, St Joe's), it accepted it. Some serious effort went into designing this one.

Since you go to Cornell, you know that Cornell is partially a private school and partially a state school. I am guessing that the creator of this quiz excluded the enrollment in the four state-funded schools. BUt that's just a guess.

@bcamp85: You're thinking of Empire State College, which is SUNY's distance/cont-ed university.
Either way, when I grow up, I'm going to Bovine University.

Definitely includes graduate students, GiantsJoe. I went to undergrad at #57 that had only 5,000 or so undergrads, but 10,000 with grad students; and I'm now in grad school at #93 which has a little less than 3,000 undergrads, but 7,000 with grad students.
