I wouldn't consider Laos as one syllable

If you put enough accent on it Ireland could be 1 syllable.

I can't think of any accent where Ireland could be one syllable, certainly not any Irish accent. If "louse" is one syllable then so is Laos.

Laos (pronounced /ˈlɑː.oʊs/, /ˈlaʊ/, or /ˈleɪ.ɒs/), officially the Lao People's Democratic Republic

Laos is two syllables. Zaire is no longer the official name of a country. And the Irish name of Ireland is "Eire," which is one syllable.

Laos is one syllable. I pronounced it incorrectly for years too, so don't feel bad.

Laos has multiple correct pronunciations, at least two of which are two syllables, so whoever "corrected" you guys was kind of a jerk :P http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/laos

Regarding Eire, I wasn't really going for what the countries call themselves. If that were the case, Greece and Spain wouldn't qualify.
