In regards to 49ers and 76ers...true, one cannot 49 nor 76. But, the suffix is used in such a way that it implies action. It's abstract but legit. Same goes for Oilers.
Rangers and Islanders are another tricky matter. In these cases, "er" refers to a state of being. Again, abstract, but "being" is actually an action. I live in America thus I am engaged in the action of being American. These teams are existing as rangers and island dwellers.
So..."ers" must refer to an action for it to be a truly correct answer. |
