| Yes, but how many World Series do the Tigers win if they have Smoltz for his whole career? Does he gain them 7 wins in '91? Doubtful, since he was pretty much a league average starter that season. He probably actually makes them worse in '88, when they finished one game out. MAYBE he gets them a title in '06, assuming he's still there by then, but now we're talking about nearly 20 years later. They didn't finish closer than 8 games out during the entire rest of his career.
So, yeah, Smoltz was great, but best case scenario is that he gets flipped for more prospects well before he's good enough to make a difference in a pennant race. That's a deal I do again, definitely. |
