| I know the title doesn’t reveal much, I’ll explain here what the ‘weight’ of a country name is. Basically, you take each letter of each country’s name and assign a number between 1 and 26 for each one (an A is worth 1, a B worth 2 etc. up to Z worth 26). Then to find the country’s overall weight you find the average weight of each of its letters. For example, take Israel (which is 99th overall, right in the middle). I = 9, S = 19, R = 18, A = 1, E = 5, L = 12. You add up all of the letters to get 64 and divide this by the number of letters (6) to get the overall weight, which comes to 10.67. All figures are rounded to two decimal places. The country names are as they appear on the results page for Countries of the World, but I don’t think the countries whose names are shortened there make any difference to the order. There are actually 21 countries in each list due to there being ties for both the 20th heaviest and 20th lightest countries. |
