There is nothing unique in 'United States of America'. Among others, 'UN', 'NI', IT', 'TE' and 'ED' are all found in United Kingdom, 'ST' and 'TA' in the -stans, 'AT' in Latvia, 'TE' again in United Kingdom, 'ES' in Estonia, 'OF' in Dem. Rep. of the Congo, 'AM' in Vietnam, 'ME' in Mexico, 'ER' in Germany, 'RI' in South Africa, 'IC' in Mexico and 'CA' in Canada.

Excellent. Two minor nitpicks: "Cote d'Ivoire" should get a lower-case "d", and you might want to make it explicit that you don't take pairs which cross word boundaries (otherwise, e.g., "czecH Republic" would knock out "baHRain").

OC is also in "demOCratic rep. of congo".

Cote d'Ivoire is a little sketchy, since Sporcle accepts Ivory Coast in geography quizzes. Great quiz.

Wow, what a fantastic quiz. Really first-rate. I'd second Micah's suggestion (#2) about explicitly ruling out word boundaries.

Oops, regarding 'OC', I knew I'd make a mistake like that. I was just using Ctrl+F on the results page of 'Countries of the World' where the DRC is listed as Dem. Rep. of the Congo. I shall remove that one now. And I'll make a note about cross-word boundaries, I was hoping there's be none of them either though I did recognise it could happen.

Like mellybmel says, this quiz twists your geography cells until they squeak. Brilliant quiz.

Interesting how many countries are so unique in their spelling. Even countries that stand out as "special" because of the way their letters are arranged can easilly be missed on another unique pair of letters. There are a few cases where I got only 2 out of 3 occurrances for a country. Great quiz.

Nice quiz but to be honest I didnt much care for the fact that one country could be represented several times. Quirk of the alphabet I know but it threw me off.

This is a fantastic geography quiz. Nominate to publish for sure! Do people think it is best to go through specific countries such as Kyrgyzstan/Tajikistan/Liechtenstein and spot unique combinations? Or go through all the countries in the world? Or just look at a combination until the correct country comes to mind?

Great quiz. I didn't do too well... probably better for the morning and not late at night - but still really enjoyed it. Definitely should be published.

Just to explain if you didn't figure it out: AZ = Brazil, ZE = New Zealand, ER = United States of America, RB = Serbia, BA = Cuba, AI = Spain, IJ = Fiji, JA = Japan, AN = Canada. And I'm not accepting Ivory Coast, because although it's accepted in other country quizzes, I must stress its official name is Côte d'Ivoire.

can someone explain to me why sporclers make such a big stink about 'ivory coast' vs 'cote d'ivoire'? Thats just how the name is said in the native language of the ivory coast (French). No quizzed accept 'italia' for italy or 'espana' for spain, even though thats the name of those respective countries in the respective languages? I'm sure i'll get voted down for even questioning the 'ivory coast' question, its just never made sense to me...

For some dumb reason their government requested a few years back that English-speaking countries begin to refer to them by their French name rather than the traditional English name we've always used, and the international community has (officially) respected their request. It's pretty much the same reason why we now say Iran instead of Persia and Thailand instead of Siam.

The official name of the country is Côte d'Ivoire because of a request by the Ivorian government, as swellwrench has explained.

@amoore... and the reason we *don't* say Myanmar-- because we don't respect their government. And @Bray, it's "Ivoirian," not "Ivorian." (At their request...)

This is a true Sporcle quiz: Loads of love for Kyrgyzstan, discussion over Cote d'Ivoire/Ivory Coast and facepalms for the obvious ones I missed. Now it just needs someone to comment that Scotland renders SC ineligible and it would have the complete package. Five Sporcles and nominated!

This quiz is fantastic! I think you missed one though: TT = Saint Kitts and Nevis. Really, though, well done. Of course I missed some softballs (apparently YE was obvious to everyone else...), but what really surprised me was how often a country appeared multiple times, but I only got it for one of its combinations.
