Hm... should I make the time a little bit shorter?

I'm making IL and IC bonus answers... they aren't correct, but hopefully it'll nudge people towards getting the right answers. The rules for subtraction are that you can put I before V and X, X before L and C, and C before D and M.

Time is fine as it is. "IV" and all its variants should also accept "IIII", because despite what elementary school teachers have said for decades now, subtractive numerals were relatively new in the Roman Empire, and additive numerals were so common that they persist today. To prove the point, look at any grandfather clock with the hours marked in Roman numerals. You will never see "IV" on the clock, it is almost always "IIII".

@Brobert2: I thought about that, but ultimately decided against it. I shall now amend that and allow IIII in place of all IVs. :)

^ I'd check that it's acceptable for all of them. I mistyped on 44 and was surprised that it accepted iiii so I tried again on I think 64 or 74 and it wouldn't accept it. I think the time is fine - nice quiz :)

@Niques: I'll double check it, but I'm fairly certain that 'IIII', 'XIIII', 'XXIIII', 'XXXIIII', 'XLIIII', 'LIIII', 'LXIIII', 'LXXIIII', 'LXXXIIII' and 'XCIIII' are all accepted. I may have mistyped the acceptable alternatives on a few.

@Niques: Hm, not sure what your problem was - I've tried it myself and all the alternatices workd. Maybe you mistyped something?

I really like it, but I thought I tried xcix and it didn't take? Or something- hard to say. Maybe I didn't, and only tried xcic. But I really like this!

Stupid, unless you're somehow implying that the US will fall just like the Roman Empire did. There's a good chance it will, frankly. This numerical system is a sorry relic of a prehistoric time of gluttony. Anyway, U-S-A! U-S-A! 1 star

More challenging than I expected. The time is perfect. Giving it five stars just to offset grumpy sandpit.

sandpit are you joking. the Roman empire lasted for about 1000 years captured most of the civilized world, and the USA uses many Roman traditions and customs, so stop being an annoying idiot, and shut up.

@UIWWildthing:: Really? I can't wait for super bowl L. It would be so boring. Just, L. You can't get excited over the letter L.

I always don't duplicate the letters fast enough. When I need to do 3 I's, I seem to do them so slowly.

I had to skip pass 41-49 because I couldn't work those out, but after 50, i got all the way to 80 before the time went out. Great quiz though, really like it.

Got caught up with 49. Quiz barely fits on my screen when nothing is answered. When I start answering, it gets too long. Cool concept.

Interesting to note which numbers are out of order in the most-guessed ranking. Looks like a lot of people had trouble figuring out numbers ending in 9.

Fun Fact: The Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer animated Christmas special has a mistake in the Roman numerals in the opening credits. Or else someone living in MCLXIV had a time machine.

The non-subtractive numerals should be accepted (eg. IIII = IV).
