| Petrograd is not a current name - in English, that city is currently called Saint Petersburg (Sankt-Peterburg in Russian). Even if you just intend the question to mean 'What was Petrograd called before it was called Petrograd', Saint Petersburg is still the right answer. The city was called St. Petersburg from its founding until 1914, when it became Petrograd until 1924, then Leningrad from 1924 to 1991, before reverting to its original name.
Zaire is not a current name, either.
You also need to decide if you want to accept all former names, or just the most recent former name. 'Previous name' sounds to me like you're interested only in the most recent former name, but French Indo-China is not the most recent former name of Cambodia. If you accept French Indo-China for Cambodia, you're sort of obliged to accept, say, German South West Africa for Namibia, Byzantium for Istanbul, or Tsaritsyn for Volgograd. I'd suggest that it's easier and better to only take the most recent former name, and to specify that in your instructions. Unless you're willing do the research necessary to track down all the former names of these places.
You should accept Dutch East Indies as well as Netherlands East Indies - both names were used as English translations of the Dutch name. Also, Ciudad Trujillo should be acceptable for the previous name of Santo Domingo.
I rate this a 1 in its current form. Sorry. |
