	N.B. This quiz is not about what people play anyway, it's about 'spectator sports' i.e. what they watch - there might be less than 30 Formula 1 drivers but there are still about 600 million that watch it worldwide. It'd be cool to have a quiz with the world's most popular spectator sports too, but that might be a tall order with sources.

	JohnJF: In terms of average crowds the NFL gets 68,000 while the AFL gets 38,000. However, limitations on stadium size and a push into markets not traditionally AFL centric means AFL numbers are pushed down. While the NFL clearly gets more people, it's probably not as distanced as what some people may think.

	@bostnboy3: Football=soccer. You'd have to be a total jackass to believe Russia cares about the NFL, but they do care about the EPL and other soccer (football) organizations. As an American who tries to appreciate both sports while communicating effectively, your ignorance saddens me.

	bostnboy3 - Russia sold 62,000 tickets for a 'soccer' match against Azerbaijan. If that gives you any indication of how popular it is there. And JohnJF & JayHankEdLyon - Point of it is, no country as ever adopted American Football as it's #1 sport other than your own.

	@Rhys: The main reason no one else picks up our version of football is because it has such high start-up costs. It's a heavily equipment-based game, much like ice hockey (yes, I know more than one country has hockey at #1, but they are ridiculously cold countries that need to do something to pass the time in the winter). Besides, the comparison is pointless. I've seen Australian football, and the two are almost nothing alike.

	@brianmcp: Being from the Northeastern US, I would say that's clearly how it originated. There's a reason it only spreads to other cold countries that don't need to artificially maintain rinks in the winter. Popularity of a sport starts at the youth level. Kids don't exactly go out to play tennis in the snow in the winter. When there are plenty of frozen ponds and lakes around, they play hockey.

Russia have one of the top national teams in the world and in their champions have just beaten Barcelona, IN Barcelona. I'm sure most of them would sell their grandmothers to even qualify for the coming World Cup.

	@bostnboy3 - Because football is a much bigger sport worldwide than ice hockey, the EPL has far more places to recruit their players from than the NHL. Hence only the very best Russians (Arshavin, Zhirkov, Pavlyuchenko) are playing in the EPL. The next tier of Russian players play either back in Russia (which has a very strong league itself) or in places like Germany. With ice hockey the top Russians are amongst the best in the world, and the NHL is by some way the best and most lucrative league in the world, so it makes sense that they play there. None of that makes any real difference to the popularity of the sports to spectators, though, so I'm not sure what your point is.
