You have Arlington as a state and pretty sure that Lexington, KY is larger than Lexington, NC

@jcewt01, regarding Arlington, that was just a dumb mistake on my part. It is fixed. Regarding Lexington, Kentucky, it is no longer officially a city. It is now Lexington-Fayette Urban County, so it isn't included in this quiz.

On wikipedia, i count 21 states with a city or town named springfield (CO, FL, GA, IL, KT, LA, ME, MA, MI, MN, MO, NE, NH, NJ, NY, OH, OR, SC, SD, TN, VT)

You should have Amherst on there. There are at least 11 of those throughout the USA (CO, ME, MA, NE, NH, NY, OH, SD, TX, VA, and WI). Most of these are really small but there is no minimum population provided for this quiz. Largest: Amherst, NY. Population: 116,510. Source: Wikipedia

I always hate when people get technical about what is a "city" on quizzes like this. It's a lot of unnecessary data to remember, and cities, towns, villages, and Census Designated Places are all counted as equivalent entities by the US Census Bureau.

I agree that Lexington, KY is larger than Lexington, NC. I think there should be a minimum population, though.

@geomonkey, according to the U.S. Census Bureau, there are only ten Amhersts, and six of those are townships or towns (towns are township like forms of government in New York, Wisconsin, and the New England states). If we started counting towns/townships, it would get excessive. For example, in Pennsylvania alone, there are 22 Washington Townships.

@gustavpolo, actually, according to the U.S. Census Bureau, there are 42 Springfields. But that is if you count non-cities like towns, census designated places, and towns/townships (including nine Springfield Townships in Pennsylvania).

I was going to suggest Portage, of which there are 8, but quick research shows that some of them are towns with less than a thousand people, so it probably doesn't fit here. I just knew about it because you pass signs for four or five of them while driving on I94/I80 from Minnesota to Pennsylvania (with one in WI, OH, IN, MI, and PA), which makes the drive seem a hell of a lot longer when you feel like you're passing the same town every four or five hours.

@MisterF, it isn't exactly true that the US Census Bureau treats all of those places as "equivalent entries". They have data sources that just have incorporated places, for example. And the US Census Bureau clearly doesn't treat CDPs the same, as they don't even release annual population estimates for CDPs as they do other places.

There are definitely more cities with these common names. There are more than 17 states with a "Franklin" alone.

@daHOOK, what about West Liberty? Are you saying it should be included? There are two cities named West Liberty, in Iowa and Kentucky. There is also one village in Ohio, one borough in Pennsylvania, and one town in West Virginia, but I'm not counting those. And, even if I did, there'd obviously only be five.

What about Middletown? Off the top of my head, there are Middletowns in CT, NY, PA, NJ, RI, and OH, and I'm sure there are more...In fact, checking Wikipedia real quick, it lists almost 20.

You know it's a good quiz when the answers pop up and you start thinking "Yeah, should have tried that one. Oh, and that one. Oh, and why didn't I think of that one?" One minor complaint - I'm pretty sure the largest Lexington is the one in Kentucky; it's about ten times larger than the one in NC.

@david6k, as I pointed out in the archived comments, Lexington, Kentucky is no longer a "city", per se. After the City of Lexington merged with Fayette County, it is now classified as an "urban county" and officially called "Lexington-Fayette Urban County".

Yes, I was trying Kings/Queens of England and their houses, but this tactic calls into question the quality of the source. There are at least 15 Hanovers (I grew up in one), and I can think of several Charlestons and Georgetowns off the top of my head.

"Presidents and capital cities helped." I expanded from "Presidents" to "American heroes," which helped me with Franklin and Hamilton. I didn't catch onto "prestigious colleges" in time to really help me, but that's a good one too.

Ohio features a lot on here. Did the rest of the USA copy their city names or did Ohio copy everyone else?
