easy to miss! (makes you feel dumb I'm sure, but it's too easy to miss to worry about as long as you fix it)

It is a mystery to me why you did not include Gary, IN on the list, with just 700 fewer people than Troy, MI, making it over 80,000 too.

@andr5046: I originally wanted to keep the list to 10 4 letter cities, but you're position is a sound one. I've added Gary. @grand47: Check my note at the top. If 68% of quiz takers are getting St. Paul, that's a pretty good indication that my decision to include it is a fair one. Of course, reasonable people can disagree, but that is why I added the asterisk.

Great quiz. It really says something about society that Boise has more people than Akron.

From Omaha, missed Omaha, never assumed the city proper was larger than Miami. Interesting quiz!

The Omaha > Miami thing is an artefact of how city boundaries fall. Omaha’s metro has about 850,000 people, with the city proper covering almost half of that. Florida subdivides cities much more tightly, so Miami itself has just under 400,000, but its county has 2.5 million and its metro area has 5 million — many, many more than Omaha!

@midlifecrises: I had this quiz in my cache from a couple of years ago when I came out with my 7 letter US Cities quiz. (You will see my comment in that quiz where I talk about making a quiz with short-named US Cities). When I started making quizzes again recently, I updated this one with the new data from the 2010 census and released it. I did not know about your quiz, but if you want royalties you got em!

BTW, the link for that 7 letter US City quiz is here: http://www.sporcle.com/games/7letteruscities.php. You will see down in the comments on that quiz my statement that I was making a quiz of US cities with 6 or fewer letters.

According to your source, it is Boise City. Boise should only be a bonus answer.

You really shouldn't allow St Paul as this is a clear contraction. And I say that as someone who needed that point (though as a non-US Sporcler I'm happy to be on the right side of the median)

@bsd987: that is to distinguish it from Boise County which is part of the Boise metropolitan area. Ada County (where Boise is located) split from Boise County in 1864 just before it became the territory's capital city. Admittedly, a very confusing bit of history.

Boston has a small area, almost half of which is water, so only 48 sq. miles of land. The surrounding cities are all very densely populated, and the Boston metro area has about 4.5 million people. I'm happy that I remembered the city I live in, which is 6th from the bottom right now: "City of Sin".

@MrCaliChicago - Its probably because only the city proper was counted in this quiz. If the sizes of the metros were used, I'm sure Miami would be larger.

what is the cutoff for this list? Peoria, AZ has about 155,000 people. Corona,CA has 152,000, Pomona, CA has 150,000, Joliet, IL has 148K, Dayton, OH has 142K, etc. The list goes on and on. What is the cutoff for cities to make this list?

I'm also going to argue for the exclusion of Saint Paul. I did get it because I wanted to see if you'd included it or not - but that doesn't make it correct per se, as you argue in the archived comments. If you accept abbreviations, then why not Vegas for Las Vegas, B-more for Baltimore, or if the quiz included even shorter names, NYC or LA? The fact that it's asterisked at all means it doesn't belong. Compromise - make it a bonus answer instead.

How about an argument FOR St. Paul? Look on Google maps, it's St. Paul. B-more? Really? You're comparing THAT to St. Paul as an abbreviation? Vegas...nickname...B-more...nickname. LA, NYC...nicknames.

I'm with Pogues. St. Paul OR Saint Paul are both correct and legally accepted names for that city, whereas Vegas is not.
