Great quiz! Despite what your source says, however, Fife is not a city.

Thanks Shay. I see you are correct. I've removed it and added the next city.

Thanks for the catch yellowcarpet. I thought I might have accidentally deleted a city - ended up being Naples - during quiz creation. I've added it back in and rechecked the rest of the answers.

The thing is, a lot of these russian cities are located in the asian part of the country. So not really Europe. But I think it will be a bitch to check them all!

@Pelmert: Thanks for the heads up. I've checked all the Russian cities and removed the few in Asia. More interesting cities were next in line.

I'm surprised that City Mayors places Tirana so low... not that I really know anything about the city, but other sources seem to give it a lot more.

@ skizzo - I don't think the source does that unless you can point out some examples.

One of the best and most creative quizzes on Sporcle. This makes one see Europe in a completely new light -- and it's a harsh light, because it definitely shows how little I know.

Its tough to tell what cities in Russia are in Europe and which are in Asia, especially since the Ural Mts. aren't labled very well on my map.

I know "thedropsoffire", I kept typing in Bern, thinking, "C'mon, it's a big city in Switzerland, the capital even". I typed in Wien or Vienna, no good on that one, either.

This quiz is horrible for anyone who doesn't know the correctly anglicized version of every city's name. The quiz maker should have included alternate versions.

@ SaintPetersbourg: Sporcle is a website in English. There is no way anyone could possibly know the native language spellings of all of these cities without looking them up. Even then, many of the native language spellings (such as Wien for Vienna and München for Munich) would affect whether the city would appear on this list at all and if so where. While it would be nice if I could include the native-language versions of the city names that happen to have the same number of letters as the English versions of the city names, I think an expectation for such alternates for every city listed here is unrealistic. And if I did some, but not others, I would be criticized.

@Davidos: on the ground, the Russians themselves have marked very well the boundary Europe-Asia, so there is no doubt about the continent to which each city belongs. There are several columns, monuments and even lines marked on the highways with the inscription Европа (Yevropa) on one side and Азия (Aziya) on the other.

Good quiz! If the boundaries are done purely by geography though, then surely the European bits of Georgia, Azerbaijan and Kazakhstan should be included? Or are they included and Baku and Tblisi just happen to fall in Asia or outside of the range of this quiz?

Maybe give a bonus for Hull (UK)? Its official name Kingston-upon-Hull is too long, yes, but it’s always known as Hull and is big enough that it would count in the 4-letters.
@DunKhan
: your argument has good logic to it, but the well-established Sporcle convention is to treat Russia and Turkey as bicontinental but the Caucasian countries as entirely in Asia.

Am I the only one that put in Brest and meant the one in Belarus? For those not familiar with the city, look up the treaty between Germany and Russia that took Russia out of World War I. It's the Brest in the Treaty of Brest-Litovsk.
