This quiz is dedicated to googlebird, and inspired by my misinterpretation of her icon's brilliant plumage a few weeks ago in the Seattle quiz. *blush* — I am not an ornitholigist, so any comments will be very welcome.

Well, most of these birds are from the US and I don't know how far afield they roam but I'm fairly sure they aren't found over here in the UK. That doesn't detract at all from this great quiz, looking for similar features in unknown feathered friends adds an extra dimension. Thank you BombaySapphire!

@sufradley: I really wanted a more global scope, but after a frustrating week of trying to find "public domain" images, I settled on a US government source for most of the birds, where they were not subject to copyright issues. I may try again for a sequel, if I can summon the patience to wade through the lawful sources. Thanks for the feedback!

@BombaySapphire - Totally surprised to click on this quiz and see my icon. First reaction...WTF! (Pardon the expression.) How sweet of you to create a quiz based on an innocent mistake. I'm laughing, touched, and impressed all at the same time. This is really a good looking quiz. Now I need to play it to see who I end up with! Thanks, my feathered friend.

I only managed 4 pairs. Clearly, I'm not a bird matchmaker, but bird lovers should do well on this. Thanks for the bonus! Very creative. This should be published (minus C4)! It was fun and challenging. Thanks.

@googlebird: I'm delighted that you're happy with the quiz. To quote Tom Petty, "The waiting is the hardest part." I've been nervous for all these weeks to see what your reaction might be, and it's a relief to see that you approve. *blush*

@sufradley: it’s certainly US-heavy, but by no means exclusive. The mallards, bullfinches, reed buntings and peafowl are all reasonably common in (parts of) the UK; the bowerbirds, fairy-wrens and boobies are also all non-US birds. @BombaySapphire: for consistency with the other species, maybe give the Fairy-wren its full name: the Superb Fairy-wren?
